Some Interesting Facts About Terminal Blocks

In the modern day, aircraft are often filled with countless electrical assemblies, devices, and components that make the functionality of various systems possible. In order to meet various objectives related to cost and weight, aviation electrical assemblies are designed with efficiency in mind. One of the most common components found within aircraft electrical systems is the terminal block, that of which is found in many industries and applications for the means of supporting wires and cables in their connection. In this blog, we will discuss the main advantages that terminal blocks present to aircraft design, allowing you to better understand why such parts are relied on.

While crimping is a common method that allows for simplistic attachment of wires, it is not the most desirable method as a result of the issues that can come about if the process is not carried out correctly. Despite some terminal blocks requiring crimping for attachment, a majority make connection easy, as wires or cables simply need to be inserted within open ports before exposed ends are clamped and tightened down with screws.

The general lack of any crimping tool requirements can also make such devices easier to use as one would only need a screwdriver and a wire stripper. With the screwdriver, an individual will generally have an easy time clamping wires within the terminal block as screws are turned, and the wire stripper ensures that any protective outer layers can be removed with ease. If you do not have a wire stripper, utility knives or other similar cutting tools may be suitable for the job.

Aside from allowing easy installation, terminal blocks are also known for their ability to allow one to organize their electrical assemblies to a high degree. Instead of having to individually connect wires where they may easily become disorganized, terminal blocks provide a secure, fixed location where wires and cables are neatly organized and managed. With the addition of color coding or other notations, conducting any replacement is much quicker when compared to one having to dig through a bundle of wires.

All terminal blocks are designed to organize wires and cables while offering ease-of-attachment, but there are some subtypes that may be taken advantage of when there are additional needs for the assembly. For example, barrier terminal blocks are a specific subtype that feature ring terminals, further allowing for wires and cables to remain secure even while being subjected to vibrations.

Another common subtype is the push-fit terminal, and they are known for providing one of the easiest installation methods of the bunch as they only need a push for a wire or cable to be secured. What this means is that there is no need for manual screw tightening as the terminal block features elements that will automatically clamp down onto the wire or cable when it is pushed in. With a variety of special types existing across the market, there is often a solution for any particular aviation electrical assembly need.
